The state of Maryland does not regulate the licensing process to become a concrete contractor. The licenses you need to obtain at the state level are for specialty trades, such as plumbers and electricians. However, if you plan on providing services as a concrete contractor, you will still need to meet certain requirements. The Maryland Home Improvement Commission handles the process of approving any state-issued licenses.

Licensure laws in Maryland will also require you to meet certain standards when it comes to experience and education. The process ensures that you are upholding certain legal and financial standards while also providing quality installation and repair services. Clients are much less likely to do business with an unlicensed contractor because they will lose certain protections and guarantees under the law.

Now let’s discuss the licensing process. If you are unsure that you will need a license to run your business, then we recommend that you contact the Maryland Home Improvement Commission. Before you submit your application, you will need to meet certain requirements:

  • At least two years of previous experience – Before you can register to take your licensing exam, you will need at least two years of experience in any related field. You won’t need to meet any additional education requirements.

The state of Maryland will require you to take and pass your contractor’s exam. It consists of 55 questions and you will need to score a 70% to pass it. You will then have up to two years to apply for licensure before you’ll need to retake your exam. If you don’t pass your exam, you will have to wait a month to retake it. It will cost you $63 to take the exam and you have two hours to complete it.

Your License

The state of Maryland requires that you renew your contractor’s license every two years and pay the fee. You will receive a notification for renewal 60 days in advance of the expiration date.
