Licensing & Registration Requirements For Concrete Contractors In Rhode Island
If you work in any field related to construction and home improvement, the state of Rhode Island may require you to have a license. This includes projects that involve alterations, remodeling, new installations, and renovations. The biggest part of the entire process is to register with the State of Rhode Island Contractors’ Registration and Licensing Board. They are responsible for reviewing applications and approving applicants for licensure.
Licensing
Requirements
Rhode Island doesn’t require every contractor to possess a license, but these exemptions only apply depending on your situation. That being said, you will need to register with the state no matter what kind of service you plan on providing. Without a valid registration certificate, you won’t have approval from the state of Rhode Island to pour, resurface and repair concrete.
If you are unsure that you will need a contractor’s license, then we encourage you to contact your local county or municipal regulators. They can tell you more about the requirements and conditions. The state will require licensure for anyone who plans on providing underground utility contractor work.
No matter your situation, you will need to have general liability insurance and a tax identification number before registering your business with the Rhode Island Secretary of State. The state will also require you to meet certain education requirements.
Who Needs A
License In Rhode Island?
You will need to register as a contractor with the state of Rhode Island if you plan on advertising or bidding on projects. The Contractors’ Registration and Licensing Board recognizes two types of registrations:
- Contractor Registration – This applies to anyone working on residential structures (new and returning applicants).
- Underground Utility Registration – This applies to contractors who will install, repair, or replace sewer and water lines, storage drainage lines, and related services.
Specialty trades, such as plumbers and electricians, will need to undergo a separate licensing process.
Contractor
Registration
New contractors will need to undergo registration, which includes five hours of pre-education courses beforehand. When your registration expires, you will need to complete five hours of continuing education before filling out the renewal form.
After you complete and submit your registration form, you must also provide a signed and notarized affidavit. New and returning applicants will need to provide proof of general liability insurance, as well as a business license. You will also need to pay the registration fee included with the application.
Licensing And
Registration Fees
You will need to pay processing and administrative fees when applying for your contractor’s license and undergoing registration. The two-year registration fee for a concrete contractor is $200. All fees are payable to the Rhode Island Contractors’ Registration and Licensing Board. You can pay via physical check or money order.
Exam
Requirements
You will only need to take an exam if you are applying for an underground utility license. General contractors won’t need to complete a licensing exam, but new applicants will need to undergo five hours of pre-education courses. Existing contractors will have to complete five hours of continued education before submitting their renewal form. You will need to pay $12 per hour spent in class. You can always visit the Rhode Island Builders Association’s website for more information on contractor registration.
