Obtaining Your Concrete Contractor’s License In Michigan

You live in Michigan, and you recently decided to take the next step in your career and apply for your contractor’s license. However, the process is a little daunting, and you need some help getting started. We want to provide you with a comprehensive guide of the requirements you need to meet when applying for your license. Let’s go ahead and get started!

Basic

Requirements

To become a licensed contractor in Michigan, you need to provide proof of the following:

  • You are 18 years of age or older
  • You possess a valid driver’s license issued by the state of Michigan
  • You have completed at least 60 hours of contractor education
  • You completed and passed the licensing exam

Types of

Licenses

The two primary categories of licenses in the state of Michigan are the Residential Builder license and the Maintenance & Alteration license. The Residential Builder category is ideal for contractors providing services for commercial and residential properties. They have the training and legal

protections to undergo tasks such as repairs, alterations, maintenance, and full remodeling projects. The Maintenance & Alteration license allows you to focus on any specific trade, such as carpentry, masonry, or demolition.

Educational

Requirements

When applying for your contractor’s license, you will need to meet certain education requirements. This includes a 60-hour instructional course. If you already possess your license and need to renew it, then you won’t need to undergo any additional educational training. The educational courses consist of 10 topics broken up into 6 hours of time in the classroom. These topics include

  • Business and job estimating
  • Design science
  • Risk management and project liability
  • Sales
  • Project management
  • The residential building code in Michigan
  • State construction safety guidelines and laws
  • Three courses from any topic the contractor chooses, provided those topics are approved by the state

Additional

Requirements

Before you take your test to become a concrete contractor, you will need to meet some initial requirements. You must be at least 18 years of age, hold a valid driver’s license issued by the state of Michigan (or other government-approved IDs), and achieve financial stability at the time when you
decide to apply for your license. You must also apply and register for your contractor’s test, pay the testing fee and get a passing grade after you complete it.

We want to discuss financial stability a little more and what this means. This is a requirement that covers a lot of different things. The state of Michigan expects you not to have any personal bankruptcies. They also want you to have a clean financial record and a respectable credit score. If you have a questionable history when it comes to your finances, then we recommend that you contact the state of Michigan before you begin the application process.

How Long

Beofre I Receive My License?

The agency responsible for reviewing and processing your license is the Michigan State Department of Labor and Economic Growth. With growing interest in the construction industry in Michigan, the Department is handling thousands of applications on a month-to-month basis. On average, it takes three to four weeks for applicants to receive approval. However, this process can potentially take a week or two longer than normal. If you do have a bad credit score, then you will need to fill out additional paperwork.

Multiple

Branches

Michigan requires you to apply for a license any time you open a new location in the state. This applies to home offices as well as commercial branches. Any space that you include in your business filings, you will need to obtain a separate license for it. A new license does not require you to
complete any additional time in the classroom. All you need to do is complete the application and include the submission fee.

If you want to learn more about the licensing process, we encourage you to sign up for the instructional courses at your earliest convenience. You can register for classes via various educational resources. This is an important step in the process of becoming a concrete contractor, and we wish you the best of luck in obtaining your license!
