Basic
Requirements
To become a licensed contractor in Michigan, you need to provide proof of the following:
- You are 18 years of age or older
- You possess a valid driver’s license issued by the state of Michigan
- You have completed at least 60 hours of contractor education
- You completed and passed the licensing exam
Types of
Licenses
The two primary categories of licenses in the state of Michigan are the Residential Builder license and the Maintenance & Alteration license. The Residential Builder category is ideal for contractors providing services for commercial and residential properties. They have the training and legal
protections to undergo tasks such as repairs, alterations, maintenance, and full remodeling projects. The Maintenance & Alteration license allows you to focus on any specific trade, such as carpentry, masonry, or demolition.
Educational
Requirements
When applying for your contractor’s license, you will need to meet certain education requirements. This includes a 60-hour instructional course. If you already possess your license and need to renew it, then you won’t need to undergo any additional educational training. The educational courses consist of 10 topics broken up into 6 hours of time in the classroom. These topics include
- Business and job estimating
- Design science
- Risk management and project liability

- The residential building code in Michigan
- State construction safety guidelines and laws
- Three courses from any topic the contractor chooses, provided those topics are approved by the state

How Long
Beofre I Receive My License?
The agency responsible for reviewing and processing your license is the Michigan State Department of Labor and Economic Growth. With growing interest in the construction industry in Michigan, the Department is handling thousands of applications on a month-to-month basis. On average, it takes three to four weeks for applicants to receive approval. However, this process can potentially take a week or two longer than normal. If you do have a bad credit score, then you will need to fill out additional paperwork.
