Licensing Requirements For Concrete Contractors For Maryland
The state of Maryland does not regulate the licensing process to become a concrete contractor. The licenses you need to obtain at the state level are for specialty trades, such as plumbers and electricians. However, if you plan on providing services as a concrete contractor, you will still need to meet certain requirements. The Maryland Home Improvement Commission handles the process of approving any state-issued licenses.
Licensure laws in Maryland will also require you to meet certain standards when it comes to experience and education. The process ensures that you are upholding certain legal and financial standards while also providing quality installation and repair services. Clients are much less likely to do business with an unlicensed contractor because they will lose certain protections and guarantees under the law.
Registering Your
Businesse
Now let’s discuss the licensing process. If you are unsure that you will need a license to run your business, then we recommend that you contact the Maryland Home Improvement Commission. Before you submit your application, you will need to meet certain requirements:
- At least two years of previous experience – Before you can register to take your licensing exam, you will need at least two years of experience in any related field. You won’t need to meet any additional education requirements.
- Financial Solvency – The state needs to be sure that you can handle any business liabilities. Solvency pertains to the worth of all your tangible assets in addition to your credit rating and net worth. If your business doesn’t meet certain liability guidelines, then you will need a surety bond.
- Criminal History – If the state learns that you were previously convicted of a misdemeanor offense for a fraudulent home improvement transaction, then you will need to submit your criminal record.
- Articles of Incorporation – Corporations applying for a license in Maryland will need to submit articles of incorporation and a Certificate of Good Standing from the Department of Assessments and Taxation.
- Register Your Business – Have an idea for a business name and structure? You will need to register it with the Department of Assessments and Taxation. They will then send you a certificate which you will submit with your application.
- Liability Insurance – Accidents are going to happen when it comes to contracting and construction services. This includes general liability insurance that will cover property damage, third-party accidents, or injury.
Pass The
Licensing Exam
The state of Maryland will require you to take and pass your contractor’s exam. It consists of 55 questions and you will need to score a 70% to pass it. You will then have up to two years to apply for licensure before you’ll need to retake your exam. If you don’t pass your exam, you will have to wait a month to retake it. It will cost you $63 to take the exam and you have two hours to complete it.
Submitting
Your Application
Once everything is squared away, you can then submit your application. You will also need to pay a submission fee of $250 as well as a $100 guaranty fund assessment and a $20 processing fee. Also, don’t forget to obtain your business license!
Renewing
Your License
The state of Maryland requires that you renew your contractor’s license every two years and pay the fee. You will receive a notification for renewal 60 days in advance of the expiration date. If you have any questions about applications and renewals, we encourage you to visit the official website for
Maryland Home Improvement Commission. They provide online workshops that help guide you through the licensing process.
If you have yet to obtain general liability insurance, then you won’t be able to apply for your license. If you’re not already covered, then you will need to shop around for insurance. Try to get a free quote ahead of time to make sure that you are getting a good deal on your insurance.
Once you receive your license, you can open your business and immediately begin providing service. We understand that there are a lot of hurdles to clear when obtaining your contractor’s license, but we can assure you that it’s worth it in the end. Just take things one step at a time and you will be installing new concrete in no time!
